Explorer Scouts is a section for 14 to 18 year olds and is designed to provide everything Scouts does but with more input from its young people. Explorers are encouraged to take on more leader related tasks like organising their own camps, activities, budgets and managing their own programme. All under the guidance of an adult leader of course, who ensures that they still fulfill the criteria of the 14-18 programme. Explorers also perform a Young Leader role too where they work along side adult Leaders in the Beaver & Cub sections, this enables our Explorers to learn leadership and mentoring skills.
The Trident Explorer Scout Unit meet on Wednesday nights from 7.40 pm until 9.00 pm and usually average a membership of around 10 -15 young people. It is the youngest section of the Scout Movement having been formed in 2003, to replace Venture Scouting and bring the older section more inline with modern culture and society.
The Unit is made up of members and a committee being led by a nominated Chairperson the committee represents the whole Unit and liaises directly with the section leader, who will steer the committee when they need help and guidance.
All Explorers work through a progressive training award scheme and are also able to earn specialist activity badges, and Chief Scout Platinum & Diamond Awards too.
As a new member we will normally give you a couple of weeks to settle in although you will be expected to pay for any extra activities such as swimming, camps etc. Hopefully you will want to continue at which point you will start paying subs and will need to get a uniform.
Our Explorer Unit is presided over by our Explorer Scout Leader Martin and he’s assisted by Charlotte aka ‘Sherbert’ for more information on Explorer Scouts check out the official scouts.org.uk section info page here.
